The Roosevelt High School Rough Riders boys basketball team wrapped up their regular season on a three-game winning streak, playing host to Berthoud and Timnath, and the season finale on the road at Thompson Valley.
February 17 against Berthoud, the Rough Riders won 52-45. Freshman Heydyn Bahnsen-Price was the high scorer, tallying 18 points. Senior Brody Burke continued his great season on the glass, grabbing 16 rebounds.
February 19 again the Timnath Cubs – one of the Rough Riders three losses in league play – Roosevelt avenged those losses by a score of 4847. Junior Noah Lucero was the high scorer for the Rough Riders, and the only person eclipsing double digits. He had 23 in this game on only 12 shot attempts.
Against Thompson Valley, RHS would win 57-48.
The Rough Riders finish the season at an 18-5 overall record on the season and 13-3 in league play.
At the beginning of the season, head coach Tommy Ervin talked about improvement. Last season the boys won 11 games, improving by six wins from the season prior. At the beginning of this season Coach Ervin said, “We made a six-win jump, we want to make that same jump again.” The boys would add seven more to the win column. A goal Coach Ervin set at the beginning of the season has now been accomplished, but the end goal is not finished.
The playoffs.
The boys qualified for the state playoff bracket. They come in at the 17th overall seed and will take on the 16th seed Frederick Golden Eagles Friday at 7 p.m. in Frederick.
The Golden Eagles go into state with a 15-8 overall record, and a 9-4 record in conference play. Frederick averages more points per game than Roosevelt, but Roosevelt averages much less points against. These teams had one common opponent this season, they each played the Poudre Impalas. The Rough Riders lost, and the Golden Eagles won. But there is more context here: Roosevelt played them on the road, and Frederick played them at home.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Lady Rough Riders season wrapped up with the same closing opponents as the boys team. At home against Berthoud, the ladies would win 74-69. Led by Kyla Lin Hollier again, with 30 points and 15 rebounds, junior Ava Grosboll with 26 points and 11 rebounds, and junior Halle Adams with 14 points and four made three-pointers.
