The Roosevelt High School boys basketball team tipped off their season this past week, playing three games, the first one on December 1 against Eagle Ridge Academy. The Rough Riders got right to work on the offensive end, tallying a week-high of 72 points, defeating the Academy Warriors 72-62.
The Riders were led by senior Jack Cook, scoring 21 points on five of 10 from the field, two of three from threepoint range and nine of 10 from the free throw line. Also, senior big man Brody Burke put in 18 points of his own, going a perfect eight for eight from the free throw line. Burke also had 10 rebounds, putting together a double-double to start the season. Senior Brooks Reckard also put up a double-double himself, scoring nine points and dishing out eight assists.
The Rough Riders got to the line often, making 26 free throws on 33 attempts.
The boys took on the Canon City Tigers on December 5, notching their second win of the season, winning by a score of 51-32.
They held the Tigers to under 10 points in each of the first three quarters and only allowed them to score 11 in the fourth.
Once again led by the two seniors, Cook and Burke, Cook put in 17 points, shooting three of five from the three-point line. Burke put up another double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, six of them being offensive rebounds. Freshman Heydyn Bahnsen-Price put in 10 points of his own.
In the third game of the week, the Rough Riders took on Pueblo County. The Rough Riders came away with their third win of the season, defeating the Hornets, 49-43.
Scoring was once again led by Cook, scoring 13 points. Senior Landyn McCann added 10 of his own. This game was a well-rounded offensive effort, with six players scoring five or more points.
Junior Noah Lucero led the way on the defensive end, tallying a total of six steals. The team had 12 steals in the game.
The boys look to continue their hot start this week, playing three more tournament games to tip-off the season. Their first conference game will be at home against Wellington on December 15.
