The month of February for the Roosevelt High School Lady Rough Riders basketball team has been lovely…and victorious. They have played five games and are 5-0 this month, improving their record to 13-7 overall and 11-2 in league play.
Opening the month, they played the Northridge Grizzlies on February 3. The ladies would go on to win this game 64-46. Led by senior Kyla Lin Hollier putting in 26 points and collecting six rebounds. Junior Ava Grosboll had another good game as well, scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, getting a double-double.
It was then on to the second Greeley opponent of the week, this time traveling to Greeley Central to play with Wildcats on February 5. The ladies once again put up points and didn’t allow many on defense, winning this game 57-39. Led by Hollier once again, with a double-double scoring 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Junior Halle Adams added 12 points of her own, knocking down four three-pointers.
There is a trend here, it’s the Rough Riders with a lot of points, and their opponents with not much. That trend did not stop there in an out of league matchup at home against Glenwood Springs on February 9. The Rough Riders would win this one 61-37 with another great performance from Hollier, 25 points and 16 rebounds. Grosboll with another double-double herself, 13 points and 11 rebounds. And Halle Adams finding her rhythm from deep as well, adding in another 12 points, with all her points coming from behind the three-point arc.
Their biggest win of the month came against the Mountain View Mountain Lions by a score of 71-21. Hollier once again with an outstanding performance, scoring 29. And junior Adams continues her hot month shooting the ball, scoring 21 and making seven three-pointers.
But the ladies got tested by Severance on February 12, winning this game 62-56. They found themselves going down into the fourth quarter for the first time this month, 48-51. The Rough Riders would out score the Silver Knights by a score of 14-5 in the fourth quarter to come away with their fifth win this month, and in a row. Hollier with 44 points in this one, continuing her phenomenal senior season.
About a month ago when head coach Kerstin Young was asked about whether the team is on track, one thing she said was, “our biggest improvements will continue to come from the defensive end and trusting one another offensively.”
And improving they have done. In January, the ladies were giving up 43.6 points per game, so far in February, 39.2. And offensively, they averaged 46.3 points per game. In February, that number jumped to 63.
BOYS BASKETBALL
The boys have had just about as good of a month as the ladies, with just one blemish on February 12 on the road at Severance, 35-62.
Other than that, they are 4-1 this month, moving their overall record to 15-5 and their league record to 10-3.
So far this month, they have beaten the Northridge Grizzlies 82-45, Greeley Central Wildcats 85-67, Pueblo East Eagles 54-37, and Mountain View Mountain Lions 7832.
Both teams’ seasons wrap up this week, at home against the Timnath Cubs on February 19, and the finale on the road at Thompson Valley.
